FEED

After experiencing the book Feed, I feel that it really demonstrated and painted a picture of what our world could possibly end up like. Its so sad that the people in the book lost their sense of personality. Its like they were dehumanized by the feed. They had no emotions or comprhension of feelings. they were just brainwashed. It really got to me at the end when Violet was dying and Titus was in the room with her and he was trying to express his love. He was trying to explain to her their love story. But when doing ths, it sounded like a preview for a movie, like an advertisement. he had not one original thought for himself. He even said that their love was rated PG 13?!?! wow. He started to cry and he said it was the first time he has cried? What kind of world is that to live in where you dont experience emoitons, passion, and a yearning for life? The feed was supposed to be a good thig where knowledge and learning was more efficient but instead it turned into a deadly monter that dehumanzied civilization.

The Dumbest Generation

So after watching the movie, The Dumbest Generation, I have to say that I dont quite agree with Dr. Bauerlein's opinion of us being the dumbest generation. I feel that he had some valid points, but I dont think that we are dumb. I feel as though we just dont apply ourselves. We all have potential to do well and to gain knowledge and to broaden our learning, but we dont choose to do so. Instead of going to the museum we would rather go to the movies. The innernet makes it easy for us to find information at the click of our mouse. But we arent on the computer reading about the history of the holocaust, instead we are mindless social networking on facebook. There is a time for work and to get our education and that is why we are at college. We arent dumb. we are preparing for our future and gaining knowledge. I think he goes overboard to say that you shouldnt trust anyone under 30. Its not our fault that we were born into a world of technology and the ever widening horizon of inventions and advances. I alson feel as thouh he didnt have any details to back up his statements. He had numbers and statistics, but we are all different. we are individuals, not statistics.

Advertisents & meaning

When watching the videos in class this week, they really opened my eyes. I especially enjoyed the Killing us Softly clip. It made me to critically look at advertisements and ask myself what is their message? what are they really trying to tell me to do or to buy? Now that I have seen this movie, I see that ads sell images of women. These images are focused on how we as women look and that our looks are important. We have to all have the ideal image of flawlessness. We as young women in society today feel the extreme pressure to be perfect. We have to strive to fit in and be perfect and beautiful. Our self esteem is lowered when these ads are thrown in our face. Men think that all women need to be perfect and look like the models they see in ads. We also have to have the perfect body. Well lets face it, we all arent a size zero! Why are our looks so harshly emphasized?! She said only 5% of americans really only have this body type that is desireable or found to be attractive and its genetic! you cant diet your way to it! This is why we as women and girls feel the intense pressure and stress to be perfect and accpetable. Ads are selling more then just products. They are selling sex. Ads have gone to the extreme today with sexual suggestions and risky messages. I never realized this until after watching this clip. I agree with all that she had to say.

A manufactured world

As I read Culture Jam, I constantly find myself gasping and agreeing with the things that are being pointed out. A particular passage really caught my attention. This passage referred to us and how we relax. We turn on the tv and we laugh at the sitcom but can't even laugh at our huband or wife?! We would rathr watch video sex then actually make love ourselves?! I just find this all too sad. We are loosing ourselves. I often wonder why is it that when we are spending time with a significant other we have to have the tv on? or we spend time together by playing video games or watching a movie? I wish that we could just turn the tv off and sit with eachother and actually engage in a conversation. I wish we could talk, listen, offer our input, share our feelings, and elaborate our thoughts. This reminded me of a time that I went over to my ex's house and we were in his room but not talking. He was playing video games and I sat on his bed with the lap top, and we didnt talk once for over an hour! We wasted the night like that?! Its just sad that our world has gone from a natural happy one to a manufactured one. We can't even take the time to enjoy eachothers' company!
